“Virile Agitur”
(by Charles Fairlie – Client Dev./Marketing Dir.)…
I was in Melbourne the other day, meeting three people who, for various reasons, find that they need our help. Two of them had been advised to go bankrupt by other companies, which will remain nameless. (They were even charged a four-figure fee for this great advice!)
That’s another story for another day. Thankfully they found us in time.
In between meetings, I was on the phone to a man, (and I use that word “man” on purpose) about his finances, and how we could help him. His situation was dire, he was physically and financially wrecked, washed up and down for the count, to mix a few metaphors.
In a nutshell a tractor had rolled onto him, crushing his legs, some 2 years ago.
He has since had operations to remove both his knees, and was waiting on the same for one of his ankles. Sure he’ll get a payout from WorkCover eventually, but I know what he’d rather have. His own money ran out ages ago and now he’s in severe debt.
He was originally told he’d never walk again, but he can now stand and walk, so he looked on this as a bonus, and he focussed on that.
The thing that struck me was his amazing attitude and his sense of humour, or more than that, his demeanour. He was happy the day I spoke to him, but also confessed to having down days as well, as you’d expect. He had been through so much, but still looked on the bright side of life, and was enthusiastic about his future.
He was getting on with his life, and being a man about his troubles, facing up to them and fixing them rather than trying to hide from them. He was showing that he could do the “manly” thing.
Some schools use the Latin motto “Virile Agitur” as their school slogan, which means “Do the Manly Thing”, and he was truly doing it.
